Bernice Halvorson Scholarship

Bernice Halvorson devoted 39 years to teaching.  She established a fund in partnership with the Lutheran Community Foundation and the Southwest Initiative Foundation to provide scholarships to students interested in the teaching field.  The Madison Community Foundation facilitates these application and award process.

Criteria:  Candidates must be graduating seniors at Lac qui Parle

Valley High School, District 2853; have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; be planning a degree in Elementary education preferably; students planning degrees in other areas of education will be considered if necessary to make the award; student should demonstrate involvement in community and church activities.

 

 

Process:  Applications will be available at the LQPV High School Counseling office with announcements made to all graduating seniors.    Completed applications can be given to any Board member or sent to PO BOX 61, Madison, MN before April 15 of current year.

MCF committee members will review applications and rate each based on completeness, narrative, GPA, reference given, extracurricular activities and plans for study in the recommended area. Ratings of each student by committee members will be discussed until consensus reached. If in any given year there is no eligible recipient two scholarships may be given the following year.
